Old homes can be quite drafty, which presents myriad concerns. There is the worry of constantly being cold, of course, and this is often remedied by turning up the thermostat, therefore increasing your energy bill. If you have an older home, the best options are to install new windows, invest in better installation and have your doors weatherproofed.
But taking these steps is a big undertaking, not to mention expensive. In my home, one of the areas where I noticed the draft was the fireplace. Instead of simply installing a drab fireplace cover, I decided to use it as an opportunity to spruce up the living room. I invested in a Tiffany style fireplace screen, which effectively blocks out the cold are and brings a kaleidoscope of iridescent colors into the room.
